Apprenticeship Information
What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship combines on-the-job training under the supervision of a qualified
tradesperson and classroom training at a training establishment.
About 80% of an apprentice's training takes place on-the-job.
The other 20% involves technical training usually provided at, or through a
post-secondary training establishment such as Fanshawe College or at a Union
approved training facility.

Apprenticeship Scholarship
In the May 18th, 2004 provincial budget, the government announced an Apprenticeship Scholarship and Employer Signing Bonus initiative. This initiative, which is being administered by the Job Connect and Summer Jobs Service Programs to youth, is intended to support apprenticeship training and employment for youth (24 years of age or less) who have left school early and require academic upgrading to meet the minimum academic entry requirements to register as apprentices in an apprenticeship program.
In order to be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:
** Be twenty-four years old or younger
** Be registered as an apprentice after May 18th, 2004
** Have left school before returning to obtain the academic upgrading necessary to meet the minimum academic entry requirement for your apprenticeship after April 1st, 2004 and before having been registered as an apprentice.
If you meet all the above noted criteria, you may be eligible for a $1,000.00 Apprenticeship Scholarship. Your employer may be eligible for a signing-bonus of $2,000.00.

Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit
The Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit was passed by the Ontario government on December 16th, 2004. This initiative plays an integral role in supporting the government’s priority of increasing the number of apprentices to 26,000 annually by 2007/08.
The tax credit provides businesses with up to $5,000.00 per year over the first 36 months of training of apprentices in eligible fields ($15,000.00 maximum). Depending on the size of the business, the refundable tax credit would reimburse employers for 25% or 30% of the cost of wages for eligible apprenticeships. Eligible expenditures would be salaries and wages paid after May 18th, 2004 and before January 2nd, 2011.
The apprenticeship training tax credit applies to all motive power, construction, industrial as well as some service sector trades.
